Our team partners help our patients in their fight against cancer. Using the latest technologies and procedures, we tackle the toughest cases, as we lead the region in cancer care. Washington Hospital Center Cancer Institute Since 1992, we have been both a regional leader and national model for comprehensive, integrated, interdisciplinary and patient-focused diagnosis and treatment. WCI's commitment to provide clinical research trials and to retain internationally renowned oncologists enhances its mission to meet the emotional, spiritual and informational needs of the Washington community.

Washington Hospital Center's Cancer Program, designated by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACOS) as a "teaching hospital cancer program", received a full, three-year approval in 2006 from ACOS.

Washington Cancer Institute is composed of medical, surgical and radiation oncology specialty departments, along with 10 tumor site-specific interdisciplinary centers and a comprehensive pain center. Each inter-disciplinary center includes a medical director, nurse coordinator, medical, surgical and radiation oncologists and diagnostic radiologists and pathologists with special expertise in the tumor type. Last year WCI diagnosed over 2,500 new cancer cases and managed nearly 90,000 outpatient cancer visits of which 15,000 were for breast cancer.

The District of Columbia has the highest rate of cancer per capita in the United States. To maintain its position as the region's principal cancer program and to meet the increasing health needs of the community it serves, Washington Cancer Institute depends upon the generosity of its most committed donors.
Testimonial From a Washington, DC Local Treated at
The Washington Hospital Center Cancer Institute
I was diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma, a rare cancer. After my surgery, other institutions advised to wait and see if my cancer grew back and only then would they work with me. A friend arranged an appointment with the Washington Cancer Institute at Washington Hospital Center. There my doctor told me about a clinical research study that might help me. My thinking was that even if it doesn't work for me, it's providing information that might help someone else. I decided to do it. Everyone, my research doctors, nurses, technicians, and staff have been magnificent! You can't give up. You have to have a positive attitude. Research is important; it may not help my generation but it can help future generations in the fight against cancer. I believe I am alive and healthy today thanks to the research that is conducted at Washington Cancer Institute at Washington Hospital Center. -Kathy Bigelow
